ĞiğAlexander left Scotland at the age of 14, and lived in Dimerana, in the West Indies, for 18 years. He owned a plantation, raising cotton, coffee and other produce. He owned Negro slaves. He brought produce to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship of Solomon Dockendorff, Jr., to be sure to get his money. Solomon asked him to come home with him, where he met Solomon's sister, Jane, a girl of 20 years, whom he loved at first sight. Alexander went back to the West Indies, sold out, came back to Round Pond, Maine, and married her. She bore him 14 children, 13 of whom lived to adulthood.

Alexander was naturalized on 24 Apr 1839 in the District Court of Lincoln County, Maine. On the certificate he listed himself as a farmer in Scotland, and came to America from Dimerana, West Indies, on 1 Apr 1824, arriving in Bristol, Maine on 25 May 1824.

Alexander was a sea captain and was the second Postmaster of Round Pond, Maine from 9 Jul 1857 to 19 Aug 1861.
