- Rev. John Monroe's wife was a first cousin of President Andrew Jackson. She was the daughter of Margaret (Kelch) and Samuel Jackson.
John was a Methodist minister (not ordained). He traded a yoke of oxen for a farm in New Jersey, but when the farm proved to be a mountain, he left and moved to Allegheny County, Maryland near Cumberland in about 1794 or 1795. The Eldredge reference attributes this story to his father.
